Blowback Farming Is Dangerous

When politicians make over-the-top declarations, or even when they say especially callous things, it is important to remember that any blowback their glib statements bring down will hit not them, but more likely the people they are seen to “represent.”

Locke noted at the end of his second treatise that a man may at any time decide that there is no earthly judge who will fairly arbitrate his perceived conflict with another. At that point, no force on earth can stop him from viewing himself as at war, and acting accordingly.

The negative effects that come from this are rarely visited on the politicians, but rather their constituents, or whomever the outsider might perceive as constituents.

This creates an incentive for politicians to essentially farm blowback, to make outrageous statements that lead to a tragedy, and then to use that tragedy to enact further violence, all for their own personal aggrandizement.

It is important to recognize this process for what it is.
