Super-Quick Book Praise: Provoked, by Scott Horton

Just a quick post today as I’m working on some other stuff, but I finally finished Provoked by Scott Horton and it was fantastic!

It’s an in-depth study of over 40 years of history, chock-full of thousands of contemporaneous citations showing how world leaders lied to us and each other every step of the way, pushing two of the world’s most influential powers into the terrible relationship they have today.

Iran Myopia

I kind of let this one get stale a bit, but I wanted to outline a few thoughts about the propagandistic nature of the name, “The Twelve-Day War.” Certainly the government wants you to believe that everything is over and done with, but we can’t say that about everyone…

Dumb Arguments and Arbitrary Elements

Elica Le Bon v. Her Reflection

There are a lot of ways to make a weak argument. One of the most common is to base your argument on some arbitrary selection–the endpoints of your graph, or a significant event. The problem is that such arguments are usually not universal, and can easily be turned back against you by a different arbitrary choice.

Blowback Farming Is Dangerous

When politicians make over-the-top declarations, or even when they say especially callous things, it is important to remember that any blowback their glib statements bring down will hit not them, but more likely the people they are seen to “represent.”

History, Subtlety, and Complexity in International Relations

This video both is and isn’t about the war in Ukraine. It would be more accurate to say it’s about the principles behind what’s going on in Ukraine now, and happens around the world in foreign policy all the time.

These kinds of events always are more complex than they are presented, and interested parties always frame things in ways that work best for them. That’s why it’s always important to look behind the curtain and get a better understanding of the circumstances.

This is somewhat longer than my usual stuff, but there is plenty of material to cover.

Book Recommendation: “No Quarter: the Ravings of William Norman Grigg”

I highly recommend reading the book “No Quarter: the Ravings of William Norman Grigg,” published posthumously by the Libertarian Institute. I hadn’t finished it when I made this video, but I’ve finished it now, and it’s worth a look.

It’s a great book by a great guy who only got greater later in life. His incisive criticism of police misconduct and his strong antiwar stance, coupled with his amazing presentation style make for fun reading.

You can pick it up here.

Murder by Any Other Name…

…would still be just as vile.

What kinds of horrible things can the state get away with? Well, state agents can kill innocent people and get away with it. And if they declare some specific area a “war zone,” they can do it a lot, and the public doesn’t even usually care.

That’s why it’s up to those of us who love freedom to call them out for it, whenever they do it.

Here’s the article discussed in the video:
