A Little More on the Road to Wigan Pier…

After reading a few reactions to my review of George Orwell’s Road to Wigan Pier, it looked like I was a little bit unclear about Orwell’s position on socialism. I’m aware that he never denounced socialism as an ideology. However, the issue that becomes painfully clear when reading Wigan Pier is that he really had no clear idea of what socialism was or what it meant. With that in mind, I thought I’d make a quick video explaining this point a bit more clearly, so I hope this helps.

Critique of Road to Wigan Pier in the Mises Wire!

The Mises Wire was kind enough to publish my critique of George Orwell’s book The Road to Wigan Pier!

Honestly, I was really proud of this review and critique. I had heard so many good things about this particular book, and was amazed to find how shallow its analysis was.

I would love if you would go give it a read.

Book Review: Breaking Away, by Ryan McMaken

It seems like everyone is talking about secession these days. Whether they call it that, or national divorce, or some other euphemism, they all have opinions about it and most of them are woefully misinformed. Setting aside the ideologues who only want to tighten their grip on their fellow man for their own benefit, there are plenty of people who argue against secession from a practical perspective, but even these people often argue from a position of ignorance, and in this case, their ignorance is definitely not our bliss.

Book Review: A Concise History of the Russian Revolution, by Richard Pipes

The Russian Revolution is one of the darkest moments in recent history. It led to millions and millions of deaths, and even more impoverished and horribly oppressed by communist governments in the twentieth century. Richard Pipes is one of the most renowned scholars of the Russian Revolution, with two long books, The Russian Revolution and Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime, that describe in gory detail the monstrosities of Russia around the time of its red revolution.

Book Review: “The White Pill,” by Michael Malice

The White Pill isn’t what I expected, and that’s a good thing. Considering the pithiness with which terms like “white pill” and “black pill” get tossed around, Michael Malice could have gotten away with writing a witty but surface-level book about the importance of keeping a positive mindset. Instead, he has created the most insidious Tootsie Roll Pop ever–jet black on the outside, with a tiny chunk of white at the very center. The White Pill isn’t an anodyne book on optimism, but a deeply disturbing and detailed account of the rise and fall of the USSR and the Berlin Wall, with a few relevant side stories to keep things fresh.

Book Review, “How to Think About the Economy: A Primer” by Per Bylund

I recently read Per Bylund’s short and sweet little introduction to economics. It’s a small book at 132 pages and a fairly light read. It is available for free online at the Mises Institute and hard copies are inexpensive, or even free at some official Mises events.

The book provides a solid introduction to economic theory with a special focus on distinctly Austrian concepts, such as entrepreneurship. It is generally clear and succinct, and manages to make a variety of excellent points on a variety of topics.

Book Recommendation: “No Quarter: the Ravings of William Norman Grigg”

I highly recommend reading the book “No Quarter: the Ravings of William Norman Grigg,” published posthumously by the Libertarian Institute. I hadn’t finished it when I made this video, but I’ve finished it now, and it’s worth a look.

It’s a great book by a great guy who only got greater later in life. His incisive criticism of police misconduct and his strong antiwar stance, coupled with his amazing presentation style make for fun reading.

You can pick it up here.

Book Review: “Springtime for Snowflakes,” by Michael Rectenwald

Michael Rectenwald is an interesting guy who spent most of his life as a devout Marxist, only to turn over to the side of freedom quite recently. He spent a little time incognito as the “Anti-PC NYU Professor,” only to be outed and suffer a huge backlash.

He’s written a few books since then, and this is my short review of his book “Springtime for Snowflakes,” which is mostly autobiographical, but with a dash of flavor to introduce a few important topics, like Critical Theory.

Book Review: “Enough Already,” by Scott Horton

Scott Horton may be the best, most knowledgeable guy we libertarians have on foreign policy. I recently read his new book, “Enough Already,” and it’s a firehose of information about America’s foreign adventures over the last few decades.
There is a huge amount of extremely detailed information and analysis in this book, but at the same time, there are a few small issues that I wanted to bring up. Watch the review and see what you think.
