Three More Awful Institutions

Critique of Rousseau’s Social Contract, part 18

It just keeps getting worse… This week we’re looking at Book 4, Chs. 5-7. In these chapters, Rousseau introduces three new, weird, dangerous institutions to… “help.”

We’ve got the tribunate, which is a dictatorship waiting to happen, the dictatorship, which is actually a dictatorship, and the censorship, which is supposed to passive-aggressively shame and re-educate groups that get out of line.

As usual, Rousseau introduces nothing that would temper or eliminate the awful incentives such groups observe. It’s really kind of sad.
